These are probably 5 top building strategies that come to mind:
  1. Keyword Research.
  2. Content Marketing.
  3. On-Page SEO.
  4. Link Building.
  5. SEO Outsourcing.
Have any of you explored these strategies before and what were your outcomes?

I didn't... for me, it was something like... Waking up in a morning and I saw something nice in a forum community, and I was like "FFS... I will buy a domain and I will start a gaming community", without thinking of any strategies.
So I got the domain, and after (I have to mention that I never use any forums platforms before), I was... what shall I do next? So... I start reading, and I got a review about XenForo platform. I broth a licence and I had to figure out how to install it... and so on... testing and testing till I install it alone.
That was my start :)
I still learning :)
/me n00b!

At the start of my forum I spent a while each day on Google and DuckDuck Go
Watching my rankings.
But I found it was a waste of my time
As the word "forum "means so many things and Google does not really like forums
And I refuse to play their games with all their alogorthyms

Agreed, you're better off with a blog/site than a forum, it takes much more work to be ranked.

There's no harm in having forums but we all expect forums to be more of about discussions rather than informative posts. Always good to have a blog portion to it, whether that's using the built in articles system/add-on or using a CMS like Wordpress.

Definitely. Sometimes (including myself) we focus too much on branding and trying to be the best rather than enjoy the adventure, which is more important. This is exactly the thing why I'm debating to remove the google advertisements on my forum. The revenue from it does not outweigh the hideous appearance from them.

I wouldn't bother with Adsense so early on, unless you're actually getting a lot of traffic. Also Adsense isn't great at generating revenue.. I'd aim for good traffic then look at other Ad Network providers. The good ones usually want a certain amount of pageviews a month so focus on getting that up for now.

Good point there.

So far I've focused more on the keyword research than link building.
Keyword research is great and should continue to be used but link building should be used just the same. Both work well in combination. Try find websites with the same niche, with good domain authority (DA) and exchange links in blog posts with them to help your website and its content rank higher.

You're right. I blog daily on two blogs. One is page 1 for most everything I write. But it has age to the domain, thousands of backlinks, and rich content. My other blog is newer but it grows by the day - I owe the success to these blogs by posting every day.

On a forum, I post every day, multiple times I day and growth is very slow. Even on forums that are getting more and more popular.

BUT!

As a web marketer, an SEO, and a content creator - I absolutely love the challenge a forum gives me. It makes me experiment. It makes me get away from my security blanket of how I ran a forum 10-15 years ago versus how I should now. That only makes my experience better.

So, I love them both!
