Have you ever made a duplicate of your forum on your own pc?
I want to do this for backup and testing and security purposes.
I do backup my forum manually and download it to my pc from time to time
But I really want to set up a live copy of Xenforo on my PC, so that I can test various options, and to make sure that the backups are working.
I have seen some instructions on how to do this.
But it looks very complicated

Have you done it?
Should we all do it?

I always have a test install in a protected directory on the same server, but given the size of your database, I can understand not wanting to do that!
You can do it on your own machine, definitely, and it will be fine, but depending on specs it may not run too well. I imagine it'll still work alright for testing purposes.

I remember trying to get a localhost installation on my laptop and I do remember it being slightly difficult but I managed it by following this guide by Brogan.

You can also probably have it hosted on the same server as your live XF installation but in a separate folder, which sounds a lot more easier. You can read about that here also.

I only really ever did it to start building add-ons and such but that didn't really last long and now that I have my new macbook, I will need to do it again since I'm planning on creating some add-ons again.

But I'd definitely recommend a test installation for testing purposes since we've always heard those horror stories about live installations going wrong by making one mistake. I never did for JoyFreak and have always taken the risk but I've been lucky (highly not recommended though, haha).

Yes I saw that guide by brogan
There is quite a bit too it.
But I think I wil give it a go
As I want to know that my backups work
And for the odd bit of testing.
Also in case my web host every closed my acccount (as has been done to other sites by other webhosts)

I’d say keep taking back ups. But they should work fine. The simplest method would be setting it up on your host if you don’t want the hassle of going through downloading all the other applications to run it.

I’d also recommend going with a well known host if you’ve had troubles with others closing down. I find the small ones usually come and go.

A backup that you have not tested and proven to be able to restore... it's not much of a backup.

As for local copies of things, since I do a lot of my own development, everything starts out with a local copy.
